I stopped by for my bi-weekly loaf of harvest bread and noticed they had warm sausages. A smoked sausage on a freshly baked poppy seed roll with sauerkraut was a perfect breakfast for me. The sausage had a nice snap with each bite.

Some yelpers have said that they used to serve their sausages cold.   Maybe they listened and now keep them warm.   Much better.

Other than apple strudel,  their pastries weren't ready yet.    Probably a good thing as I would have been tempted.

I love this little German spot. I used to work in Commercial drive area before and this place was on top of my list for lunch or desert. They've got killer baked cheesecakes.

Hear, ye, hear ye all patrons!  Bring CASH.  They use an old-school register which looks to be from the 60's.  No credit, no debit and certainly no apple pay!

I was on my way back to Washington state and decided to drop in last minute...tried to run in the two days before, but were closed for Remembrance Day and the following day was a Saturday, also closed.  So, maybe call for hours to be sure.

With those two minor annoyances of just-my-luck timing, allow me to elaborate on the bread.  The bread....oh that I had foresight into the delights of what a loaf of fine German rye bread would be! Had I known, I would not have procured just two half-loaves.  The half-loaves concept is a fine one for those who can venture back often and want it as fresh as it can be. They cut the bread very thin, which really improves the bite.  Crunchy crust and stretchy moist centers.  How do they do it?  One loaf was a smooth German Rye (salivating just now) and the delightful mutli-grain rye...I think I'm going to have to see if I can do mail order or just go through a 2 week withdrawal period with an aversion therapist to get this bread out of my system, for we have nothing like it in the Seattle area.

While there, we had a slice of the German cheesecake, which has a very different "crust" which is more like a pie crust than the typical graham cracker crumb sort most make.  That was better.  It was far less sweet and the cheese a little "grainy", not velvety smooth.  I liked it fine, but I'm not that crazy about cheesecakes in general, whereas my dining buddy seemed to really adore it. Brought a piece of Cherry Strudel home for my daughter who in passing gave me the thumbs up sign with her mouth full of it.  She's choosy about pastries, so I believe I can translate that to "the cherry strudel is divine".

I learned about Andy German Bakehaus when searching for places that offer Black Forest Cakes. The bakery itself is quite small and offers a limited selection of cakes and pastries, as well as breads and sandwiches. For my visit there, I sampled their Black Forest Cake (duh!) and Cheesecake.

Black Forest Cake ($5): 3/5; This was unfortunately a bit of a disappointment. While the cake was moist, it was also bland and severely lacking in sweetness or chocolate flavour. Fortunately, the layers of whipping cream and chocolate shavings helped lend a bit of sweetness. My favourite part would have to be the layer of cherry filling however, which was tangy and did not have any off-putting artificial flavours that cherry can sometimes have.

Cheesecake ($4.25): 4.5/5; This was quite different from any other cheesecakes that I've had. The crust was more like a cake rather than the traditional bread crumb. The filling was firm, crumbly, and more sweet than tangy (I don't think that it has any cream cheese). It had a really nice (vanilla?) fragrance. Overall, an interesting and quite delicious version of a cheesecake.

Although I am a little disappointed by the Black Forest Cake, their Cheesecake was well worth the visit. I really would recommend people to give it a try.

As of February 10th 2018, they still don't donate all their extra breads nor compost it which is illegal. I saw them dump 5 huge floor bags filled with bread today. Won't buy there until it changes, and hope @cityofvancouver fines them.
